The Monkees flew out of San Francisco on September 14, 1968 and arrived in Sydney just after dawn on the 16th. The boys landed at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport to 500 frenzied, screaming fans. They were escorted into the VIP area of the terminal for a 5-minute customs check where officials seized Peter's reading material, William Burrough's "The Naked Lunch," stating the book was banned in Australia. The boys were then whisked into a gold Cadillac for transport to their first press conference, at the Miller's New Brighton Hotel in Botany Bay. This is all but a minute and a half of the press conference as it was presented on the 1997 compilation "The Monkees Talk Downunder." It was edited down to the maximum 10 minutes. Most of the pictures used in this slide show were taken during the Monkees' 1968 Far East tour of Australia and Japan. I spent a whole afternoon searching and gathering photos that were taken during this tour, and this was all I found. Enjoy!
