What Science Says About Vitalism: Bennetta Barrett Sikorski BCNA States Homeopathy is Scientific: The British Columbia Naturopathic Association states: I. A: Yes. Homeopathy is a highly systematic, scientific method of therapy that respects the wisdom of the body. It is a method based on the implementation of a pharmacological law called Similars. A German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann first pronounced this law, in 1796. He described it in this manner: 'any substance which, when given in a strong dose, produces specific symptoms in a healthy person, is likely, if given in a homeopathic (i.e., infinitely small) dose, to cause those same symptoms to disappear in a sick person.' Homeopathic medicine will not result in toxic or allergic side effects. Homeopathy stimulates the body's natural healing mechanisms. Proper nutrition, rest and exercise will enhance its effectiveness." II. Think about this: the better a scientific study is regarding homeopathy, then it is seen that there is no specific treatment effect any different than sham therapy or nonintervention. This makes sense, because there's nothing in the 'remedy'! That's what "infinitesimally small" means. No wonder there's no chance of a side effect! "Wisdom of the body" and "the body's natural healing mechanisms" are stand-ins for naturopathy's "purposeful life spirit," vis medicatrix naturae or healing power of nature, which is the central article of faith of naturopathy -- that often dares not explicitly speak its name. Homeopathy is mandatory in naturopathy curricula in North America. I refuse the naturopathic assertion that that which is essentially scientifically refuted, ejected and unsupported is that which is scientific and science based. For naturopaths, ANYTHING is scientific even though they claim to study "the basic sciences any general practitioner receives," including: the supernatural, the metaphysical, the idealistic...e.g., vitalism, supernatural spiritism, teleology and kind.
